Unemployment in the U.S. was 1.4%,
The cost of a first-class postage stamp was 3 cents.

Th Boston Red Sox's defeated the Chicago Cubs in the World Series.
(Their last championship until2004)
The Wimbledon Tennis tournament was not held due to World War I.

World War I had started in June 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918,
The Spanish Flu began, by 1920 over 1/2 million people in the U.S. had died on it.

In Russia, the revolutionists killed the entire family of the Czar.
The Russian Civil War lasted until 1920.

A Gallon of milk cost $.55, a loaf of bread cost $.10.
A Gallon of Gasoline cost $.08, an automobile cost $500.
The first auto in Pomerene was owned by Charles R Scott in 1919.
(The first gas pump was't installed until 1921)
Pomerene got electricity in 1930 and telephones in 1949.

Joseph F. Smith was president of the Church until his death on November 19, 1918.
Heber J. Grant was ordained and set apart as president on November 23, 1918.

Couselors to both President Joseph F. Smith and heber J. Grant in 1918 were Anthon Henrik Lund and Charles William Penrose.

Louie B. Felt, the first General President of the Primary, was still president in 1918. Emmeline B Wells was president of the Relief Society.

Martha H. Tingey was president of the YMMIA (The 2nd president of YWMIA).

San Pedro Ward was organized from the San Pedro Branch on April 30, 1905. It later was taken into the St. David Ward. In 1910 the St. Joseph Stake headquarters were moved to Thatcher, AZ and St. David became part of the Los Angeles District of the Califonia Mission, later the Arizona District of the California Mission.

*Knox Road is south of Warner, north of Ray Road and you must enter off of Rural Road. The Building is next to Corona Del Sol High School.

This was taken at the Curtis home in St David in 1971 (I think that is right because Vern was born in 1971 and he is just a tiny baby in this picture). Grandma Curtis hated to have her picture taken and it wasn’t until this was developed that we realized that she had hidden her face behind one of the grandchildren.

Your family picture was taken in St David in August 1975 (Nathan had died in March), the one of your parents is a Polaroid taken in our little living room in 1967 when they were first engaged. For many, many years we didn’t have any pictures from our wedding because we were told that the film got ruined, but some slides finally showed up in a box of things from Pomerene, but we have never printed them (these are odds and ends from my uncle Clarence Darnell in St David).

Ben, this blog is really great. It made me go into the old albums for more pictures of the aunts and uncles’ weddings. We were at Randall and Judy’s wedding at the temple, and I remember posing for pictures but we don’t have any. We did not attend their reception in St David because we were blessing Drew the next day.

That’s Dean trying on Emalene’s veil, and that’s my mother holding Dean at Marial’s reception, with my father behind her. This may be the only picture we have of the great-grandparents together, Great-grandma Brown on the left and great-grandparents Curtis on the right.

Diamond Back's Game

Here is one of Amanda's pictures from the game and one that I took of Grandma after the game. I am sure that those of you who had cameras have a lot more pictures, so be sure to send them to me for our annual CD. I am sending these in a smaller format, but you can send yours to me in the original sizes.
I know that Grandma had a lot of fun with everyone at the game, thanks for making it such a success for her. By the way, the night after "our" game, Grandma called us to point out that the Diamondbacks had scored 5 runs in the first inning (and they ended up winning 11-1). Hard to believe that was the same team on the field. For those of you from out-of-state, the Diamondbacks lost 15-1 at our game.

I Posted this Blog because I loved this picture of Aunt Marial going after the bouquet. This is the response I received from Uncle Dale.

Ben, Thank you so much for the pictures. They are proof that at one time Marial and I were young and skinny.Yes, Marial did catch the bouquet and it worked. We were the next family members married. We were married on December 19,1969. Times goes by so very quickly. Take time to enjoy your children. As scary as it may seem,you will turn around once and be our age, and your children will be your age.Thanks again for the pictures. They are real treasurers.With our love,Uncle Dale and Aunt Marial

The Dune Buggy

Ben, I talked to James on the phone this evening and asked him about the old car in those pictures. He says that Curt and Phillip Larsen got it into their heads to make a dune buggy. They took an antique car and cut it to pieces and made the car in the pictures. James was not happy about them tearing apart the old car, he thought it would have been more valuable as an antique, but Grandpa Brown said, “It’s not your car so don’t worry about it.” But after they ripped it to pieces, he wasn’t too happy about it, either. Curt would have to tell you what ever happened to it, or who it belonged to in the first place.

Evidently they also tore apart an old Case tractor, supposedly so they could figure out how an engine worked. But they threw pieces and bolts all over the place and just basically ruined a tractor that could have been fixed up and used on the farm.

This was 10 years before Mark decided to make his dune buggy, and now Dean is making one from an old VW, so it seems we have a history of those in the family.

When I first found these Pictures I knew I found a Goldmine. It is so fun to see what our Parents looked like in their teens and twentys. I asked Aunt Terry if she know when this photo was taken , and this is her reply.

I can’t give you an exact date, but it would have been around the time of our wedding, which was 9/8/65. I seem to remember making the outfit that I have on in the picture for my “going away” dress. Grandma Brown came down from Provo for it and I am not sure if she was here any other time that year, or the next. James and I went to BYU as soon as we got married, but we came back to the UofA one semester later, and we lived in our trailer up by the pond (or actually where your house is now) for a couple of months before we moved into Tucson for school.
